Theological and Pastoral Orientations on the Catholic Charismatic Renewal
In order to help those needing to make judgments or decisions about the Charismatic Renewal as it is was evolving in the world in the early 1970s, Leon Joseph Cardinal Suenens invited a small international team of theologians and lay leaders to Malines, Belgium in 1974. These people attempted to give theological and pastoral responses to some of the most usual requests coming from pastoral and hierarchial leaders.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit and Charisms Discussed in Rome - 2008
Prof. Fr. Robert Faricy gave his testimony about being baptized in the Holy Spirit and stated:
‘We have to pray with people for the baptism in the Holy Spirit, the release of the Holy Spirit,
or what ever you call it. We don’t do it enough.’ He said: ‘Baptism in the Spirit is not owned
by the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR). It can happen any time.’ Several other speakers
stressed the importance of not institutionalizing the baptism in the Spirit. What we mean by
‘baptism in the Spirit’ should be explained more clearly in the theological language of the
Church.
Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, Preacher to the Papal Household, looked back in history. ‘Charisms never disappeared from the Church, but they disappeared from theology,’ he said.

This Fourth Malines Document examines a particularly delicate subject. It attempts to answer the question: in theory and in practice, what should be the Christian attitude towards the reality and the influence of the Spirit of Evil in the world? This is a difficult problem since, by definition, we are dealing with a tenebrous realm to which no approach, whether fundamentalist or rationalist, can afford to be simplistic.
The aim of this paper is not to explore the problem in all possible directions, but to explain, more particularly, the Church’s view and pastoral practice on the subject, and to compare the mind of the Church with certain beliefs and practices regarding deliverance and exorcism which are observable in Charismatic Renewal groups or communities.
Paul VI very explicitly urged the world to give serious thought to the question of the Evil One’s action, which seems so alien to our contemporary outlook. The present study is done in this perspective.

Charismatic Renewal and Social Action: A Dialog -
According to the traditional saying ‘to desire and to reject the same things’ – ‘idem velle atque idem nolle’– is the basis of all true friendship. Dom Helder and I felt that by expressing ourselves in this book jointly, we might perhaps help to overcome a false opposition between Christians: the ‘socially committed’ and the ‘charismatics’ ones. This divide is certainly impoverishing blind spot. We should keep together ‘what God has united’: the first and the second commandment.
In our view, a Christian who is not charismatic – in the full sense of the word, that is to say, open to the Spirit and docile to his promptings – is a Christian forgetful of his baptism. On the other hand, a Christian who is not ‘socially committed’ is a truncated Christian who disregards the gospel’s commandments.
